Sunken 1930s tug on the River Thames

The sunken tug

This steel tug, built in the 1930s and weighing probably in excess of 25 tonnes, had been sunk for over ten years. During that time, several attempts had been made by others to raise it but none had been successful.

First, we removed a large amount of silt from inside the hull using pumps and a dredging nozzle. We attached five 5-tonne lift bags to the stern of the vessel and lifted it so that the deck was clear of the water. We blocked any holes in the forward section and pumped out the water to bring the whole boat to the surface. The tug was towed to a boatyard in Chertsey where it will be restored.
